Our Story

We reimagine spaces inside and out

Black Shed (BLKSHD) is a unique destination: an inspirational shop, a curated garden center and a sensory experience. We specialize in transforming spaces into living pieces of art and create ethereal gardenscapes by taking a customized approach. We look to the native landscape for inspiration and love finding balance in unexpected ways; pairing colors, textures and sounds to create fluid, natural and welcoming environments.

Our space is an extension of what we hope to bring to every visitor: joy and wonder. We poured our hearts into creating a venue to gather with a friendly, inclusive community. We invite you to browse the work of local artisans, get lost in our tranquil nursery, experience live music on the patio or connect with friends in our speakeasy-like bar, we want everyone that visits to feel like they’ve discovered a hidden gem. We offer custom garden design services, feature a rotating menu of sweet & savory goods in our cafe, host intimate pop-up dinners and source new pieces of home decor every season.

The Founders

Black Shed came together in October 2020 as a long-imagined passion project between Joe Liana and Laith Abdulkareem. After searching for much smaller retail spaces along the shore, they stumbled across this sprawling 28 acre agriculture farm for sale and quickly shifted gears. The vision became a space that offered much more than just goods for the home and garden. They set out to create a hybrid destination: equal parts store and experience.

Joe’s wealth of knowledge in landscape design laid the foundation for what Black Shed would become. His career began in interior plantscaping, where he became known for completely transforming spaces by creatively blurring the lines between the indoors and outdoors. His approach is playful, imaginative and throws rules out of the window— he loves to challenge customers to think outside of the planter box.

Laith’s background in branding, visual design and marketing helped take the concept to the next level. Years of creating seamless user experiences online found new life in our physical space— you’ll see innovative use of hierarchy, color and movement translated into areas throughout the property. Joe and Laith shared the same artistic approach and saw every vignette within the garden center and store as a blank canvas. Instead of rows and rows of plants or planters, the intention is to create inspirational works of living art.
